It's the last Wednesday of the month, so that means Uncensored Interview is back to guest blog with 10 Links A Day. Enjoy!

Perhaps we here at Uncensored Interview are a little biased towards New York City. I mean, we ARE based smack-dab in the middle of super-trendy Noho, and most, if not all of us live, eat, drink, and poop here almost everyday. But even if you’re from a far away state, or worse yet, New Jersey, you’re probably bound to visit someday, so we figured that a list of 10 sites that make indie-living in New York City more convenient would be useful to everyone. Yes, even Bon Jovi fans. Sorry Jersey, The Shark had to do it.

1. Free NYC
   Who doesn’t love free stuff? Besides rich people and Republicans, of course. Free NYC lists upcoming free and dirt cheap events all over the city, from concerts to films to stand-up comedy to even friggin’ operas. Free operas! What is the world coming to??
   
   
2. Freecycle
   Yes, this site has been featured here a few times already, but that’s only because it’s so awesome, we want everyone and their mothers to know about it. Get rid of the stuff just lying around your house taking up space, or pick up a chaise lounger that someone else has no need for, absolutely free of charge. It’s the greatest thing since sliced bread. Incidentally enough, I actually got some free sliced bread off of a Freecycle user last week.
   
   
3. Menu Pages
   Looking for a good vegan cheesesteak in the East Village? You could always ask your pal Fred, but the last place he sent you to gave you vicious diarrhea, and do you really want to take that chance again? Menu Pages lists every kind of cuisine imaginable by neighborhood (even Brooklyn!), and offers user reviews, so you won’t find yourself praying to the porcelain god later at the Telenovela Star show.
   
   
4. New York On Tap
   The Zagat guide for boozehounds, NYOT is the ULTIMATE guide to bar hopping around New York City, chronicling every single watering hole in the 4 boroughs (sorry Staten Island) and Hoboken, as well as directions on how to drunkenly stumble your way there. What it won’t tell you is whether that hot chick smiling at you at the bar is into you or not. You’ll just have to find that out on your own, hombre.
   
   
5. Oh My Rockness
   Indie rock shows are as prevalent as homeless people in NYC (only they smell slightly better), so think about just how impossible it is to document every single one going on. That’s just what the wizards over at Oh My Rockness somehow do. So if you wanna know when Shy Child or Senryu are playing at Pianos consult OMR.
   
   
6. Film Forum
   We here at Uncensored Interview aren’t just about indie music, we also love us some great indie films (we’re pretentious snobs, what can we say?), and when it comes to exquisite, top of the line indie-film far, nothing beats Film Forum. Of course, you’ll actually have to physically GO THERE to see any of the films advertised on the site, but what more do you want from us, legs?
   
   
7. Brooklyn Indie Market
   Just as we’re biased towards New York City, yours truly The Shark is equally as biased towards Brooklyn, the all-knowing, all-encompassing borough where he was born and raised. And if you love awesome clothing that flatters your lats and pecs from up-and-coming designers that won’t cost you next month’s rent, you go to the Brooklyn Indie Market. Yes, you can even find some stylishly priced skin-tight jeans (ugh!) to show off at Studio B tonight.
   
   
8. New York City Downtown Boathouse
   Indie rock kids need exercise to stay ultra thin and fit into those tight jeans they bought at the Brooklyn Indie Market, and there’s no better exercise than kayaking. Scratch that, there is a better exercise - free kayaking! Just show up to one of the locations listed on the website on a weekend or holiday, and one of the kind (but somewhat hippy) volunteers will gladly shovel you and your friends into a kayak and set you off on the Hudson River for some fun in somewhat murky waters. Just make sure you’re up to date on your tetanus shots.
   
   
9. Ride The City
   If you’re like me, then the idea of paying $4.50 a gallon to drive through the traffic-choked streets of NYC seems about as appealing as seeing a Nickelback/Daughtry acoustic double-bill. You also enjoy not getting killed while peddling your way down the hazardous Flatbush Ave Extension towards the Manhattan Bridge bike lane. Ride The City will help map the safest biking route to and from anywhere in the city for you, and it even lets you offer your own suggestions. Unfortunately “use your blinker, a-hole” isn’t one of them.

Today's 10 Links a Day: June Book Club

1. Big Russ and Me: Father and Son: Lessons of Life, by Tim Russert
   Veteran newsman and Meet the Press moderator Tim Russert is known for his direct and unpretentious style and in this charming memoir he explains why. Russert's father is profiled as a plainspoken World War II veteran who worked two blue-collar jobs while raising four kids in South Buffalo but the elder Russert's lessons on how to live an honest, disciplined, and ethical life are shown to be universal. Big Russ and Me, a sort of Greatest Generation meets Tuesdays with Morrie, could easily have become a sentimental pile of mush with a son wistfully recalling the wisdom of his beloved dad. But both Russerts are far too down-to-earth to let that happen and the emotional content of the book is made more direct, accessible, and palatable because of it.


2. Wisdom of Our Fathers: Lessons and Letters from Daughters and Sons by Tim Russert
   Surprised by the overwhelming and heartfelt reception to Big Russ and Me(2004), Russert follows that memoir of his relationship with his father with a collection of letters he received recounting relationships between fathers and their sons and daughters. Russert, host of NBC's Meet the Press, received 60,000 letters and e-mails from readers with their own touching memories of filial love. Interspersed throughout, Russert recollects moments as a son and as a father, as well as conversations with famous figures, including Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia and news reporter Maria Shriver, about their fathers.
   


3. Netherland: A Novel by Joseph O'Neill
   O'Neill has published a rambling account of one family's encounter with the attacks upon the World Trade Center and its impact upon the marrage of Rachel and Hans van de Broek. The writing is riveting and compelling as Hans is the first person narrator who tells his story in a stream of consciousness. For the reader looking for a linear story, this is not that novel. But it is also a novel about cricket (the sport), the men who play it, and Hans' friendship with Chuck Ramkissoon of Trinidad. This opens up the novel to be a tale of New York City surviving 9-11. This is one of the few times where a book is too short.


4. The Chris Farley Show: A Biography in Three Acts Tom Foley & Tanner Colby
   You don't have to be a rabid Chris Farley fan to enjoy The Chris Farley Show, an honest, endearing oral biography about a truly funny, deeply troubled addict that is as likely to make you cry as it is to make you laugh out loud. Made up mostly of excerpts from intimate interviews with family, childhood friends, famous castmates, and writers, The Chris Farley Show is a vivid portrait of a performer, told plainly by the people who knew him best at every stage of his life.
   


5. Ghosts Among Us: Uncovering the Truth About the Other Side by James Van Praagh
   Van Praagh, the New York Times bestselling author and co-executive producer of the CBS series The Ghost Whisperer, shares his knowledge and life experience about ghosts, a subject that can seem to many of us both bizarre and terrifying. But when the world beyond is explained fully by an experienced guide, dismissal and apprehension can be turned into knowledge and inspiration. 7. What Happened: Inside the Bush White House and Washington's Culture of Deception by Scott McClellan
   Scott McClellan was one of a few Bush loyalists from Texas who became part of his inner circle of trusted advisers, and remained so during one of the most challenging and contentious periods of recent history. Drawn to Bush by his commitment to compassionate conservatism and strong bipartisan leadership, McClellan served the president for more than seven years, and witnessed day-to-day exactly how the presidency veered off course.
   
   In this refreshingly clear-eyed book, written with no agenda other than to record his experiences and insights for the benefit of history, McClellan provides unique perspective on what happened and why it happened the way it did, including the Iraq war, Hurricane Katrina, Washington's bitter partisanship, and two hotly contested presidential campaigns. World Refugee Day, June 20, 2008

On June 20, we celebrate World Refugee Day. This year, events around the world will focus on the fundamental need for protection. For some, this means economic security; for others, protection is freedom from violence and persecution. On World Refugee Day, UNHCR will turn all of our attention to the millions of refugees who live without material, social and legal protection.

Protection is also about raising awareness. We cannot protect refugees if their plight remains invisible. On World Refugee Day, we will highlight the universal nature of protection. Not only are refugees protected all around the globe, but the responsibility for protection is equally global.

Ultimately, protection is a challenge that knows no borders. Neither can it be left to a single agency to provide. On World Refugee Day, UNHCR is launching a global call for action. We want to promote engagement at the grassroots level, in local communities, workplaces and online. Only through a global network of supporters can we meet the manifold needs of protection.

When to Send a Woman Flowers

Knowing when to send a woman flowers is just as important as knowing when NOT to send them. As a midlife bachelor, over the years I’ve learned that the best reasons for sending flowers include typical special occasions (like birthdays, anniversaries, Valentine’s Day). Another good reason to send flowers is if you need some extra help emerging from the dreaded doghouse. And finally – a great romantic reason to send flowers to a woman is the morning after the very first time you have become intimate with her!

Now just as important as knowing when to send flowers is also knowing WHEN NOT to send them. Don’t send flowers during a breakup. You also don’t want to send flowers simply to impress a woman – many guys do this, and it sets a bad materialistic precedent.

Holy %#@$&! We filled up our gas tank over the weekend, OMG!!!! $4.50 per gallon for gas! Immediately, we felt like we had to bring our readers tips on how to save money at the pump this summer. Sure we can tell you to stay home, but that's no fun or is that a realistic option. Safe driving! See you on the road!

7. Host a video conference instead of traveling. All you need are two web cams. 9. Map out a plan of attack for your errands ahead of time. This can prevent wasting fuel and time. With alternative routes you can prevent unnecessary stops at traffic lights and more importantly sitting in traffic jams.
